The Nepal Embassy has announced the appointment of Mary C. Carroll as Hawaii’s first honorary consul of Nepal.

The Nepal Embassy has announced the appointment of Mary C. Carroll as Hawaii’s first honorary consul of Nepal.

For more than 25 years, Carroll has been active in social and volunteer work in many areas of Nepal. She is a resident of Haverford, Penn., and Naalehu.

She is the founder and chairman of the board of the Nepal Foundation, established in 2003 as a tax-exempt organization. The foundation fosters goodwill between the U.S. and Nepal. It is currently working with a community of 1,600 people in Basa, a remote area of the country. For more information, please visit www.thenepalfoundation.org.

In 2000, Carroll was the first U.S. citizen to receive the “Friend of Nepal” Award from the Association of Nepalis in the Americas, the largest Nepali association in the U.S. and is an honorary trade representative appointed by the Federation of Nepali Chambers Of Commerce and Industry.

Carroll has served as an officer and on the boards of more than 25 Philadelphia and national nonprofit organizations. Currently she is a member of the board of directors of Aqua America Inc., the second-largest NYSE-traded water utility in the U.S. She has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Conservation Service Award, given to private individuals by the Department of the Interior. In Hawaii, she has recently joined the Hawaiian Consular Corps and is a member of the UN Association.
